Ballymacelligott GAA Club notes: 18th April 2004


All in all it was a memorable week for Ballymacelligott GAA Club with our Senior Team overcoming John Mitchel’s to take our first two points in Division 2 of the County League and our Minor Team winning the Dan Spring Memorial cup in the Coiste Trá Lí Minor League A Final. In the Minor League final Ballymac minors defeated Kerins O’Rahillys with a score of 2-9 to 1-10. Ballymac seniors have a very important game on Saturday evening next when they face their old rivals Beaufort in the first round of the Intermediate Championship.

Seniors:
The senior game on Saturday night was an excellent game of football despite the atrocious conditions. There was very little between the teams for ¾ of an hour. The half time score was: Ballymac 1-8 to John Mitchel’s 1-7. With twelve minutes to go we went five points u. However John Michel’s work rate increased and the came back to draw level. In the last kick of the game Gene O’Keeffe scored a point from a free and this secured the two points for us. The final score was Ballymac 2-11 to John Mitchel’s 1-13.

We wish Adam Jones and John Leen speedy recoveries following injuries in the game.

Minors:
The Coiste Trá Li Minor League -Dan Spring Memorial Cup Final was a contest between Kerins O’Rahillys and Ballymac. The game was played in John Mitchel’s Grounds, Tralee on Easter Monday last.
This was hard fought game with both teams playing great football. Ballymac’s Padraig McCarthy got goal early in the half and Kerins O’Rahillys struck back with a goal from a penalty. Aidan O’Connor got a vital goal for Ballymac with a few minutes left that gave them a lead at half time with a score of 2-5 to 1-3.
The second half saw Chris O’Sullivan work extremely hard for Kerins O’Rahillys and linking well with his forwards. However Ballymac continued to play well and managed to stay ahead coming in to the final few minutes of the game. Two vital points from Kieran O’Shea in the last five minutes secured the title for us. Gene Griffin the Captain of the Ballymac side accepted the Dan Spring memorial cup and thanked all the players for the effort they had put in over the past few months in training. He said they started training in the snow on the 7 th January. He also thanked their mentors: Denis O’Connor, Tom O’Shea and Denis O’Regan for all their help and training.

Minor Games this week:

  • Friday 22 nd April Listowel Emmets’V Ballymac at 7.00pm in Round 4 of Division 2 of County League. Game on in Listowel.

 

U16 Team
Our U16 team travelled to Desmonds on Wednesday night and came home with a good win. The final score was: Desmonds: 1-3 to Ballymac 2-5.
On Saturday the U16 team travelled to Killorglin to play Laune Rangers. Once again they had a good win with a score of 4-8 to 2-5. On Wednesday night next they play the final game in the Castleisland District and the Coiste Trá L í U16 B league. This team has now qualified for the semi-finals in both the Castleisland District and Coiste Trá Li district. Congratulations to all the team and mentors Ger Regan and Jimmy Breen for their success so far this year.

  • Wednesday 21 st April Ballymac V Scartaglin at 7.00pm in Ballymac in Round 5 of Castleisland District League.
  • The date for the Coiste Trá LI semi finals is not known yet.

U14 Team.
Our U14s were at home on Monday night last the 12 th April to Desmonds. Ballymac played exceptionally hard in this game and had a comfortable lead of 0-6 to 0-1 at half time. The second half saw Desmonds rally and score two goals that gave them confidence. Ballymac continued to work hard and in the end were very unlucky to lose the game. The final score was Ballymac 1-8 to Desmonds 2-3.

  • Ballymac V Beaufort on Monday 26 th April 7.00pm at home.

U12 Training
Our U12 team will play in Group F of the County League this year. This group also includes: Glenflesk, Kenmare, Rathmore and Churchill. The games will be played on Sunday nights. The first game will be played on Sunday next the 24 th April when Ballymac travel to Churchill to play Churchill at 7.00pm. Best of luck to the team and trainers as they start their seasons campaign. For many of the players it will be there first taste of competition at County level and we hope they have a great year.

U8s and U10 training
Training for our U8s and U10s continues every Sunday morning at 11.00am.
